The Magic of the Mountains

A silhouetted figure sits cross-legged at the edge of a jagged cliff, backlit by a blazing sun low on the horizon, with sun-rays fanning out over misty, forested mountain ranges below

Caw-caw, I look up and see
Has this crow been following me?
Over mountains, valleys, and mountains through
Was it the crow or me that flew?

The twitter of a bird and the gurgle of the stream
Are they real or part of a dream?
The silence of mountains fills my heart and my soul
Making me for a fleeting moment whole

Frozen in time like the ice on the peaks
Following forests and cobbled beds of creeks
Through sunshine and shadows and tendrils of mist
A calmness pervades, long sought and wished

I feel closer to myself than I do elsewhere
Questions and sadness vanish into air
In the absence of this peace how old I’ve grown
How do the mountains feel like coming home?

They whisper their wisdom, they speak to me
Reminding me of my long-lost tranquillity
They stand there timeless, immovable and quiet
And remind me life exists beyond this fight

When life seems hard, immeasurably so
When sadness and fear only seem to grow
When happiness seems like a far off dream
When life makes you want to run and scream

Go there, that place with just mountains and you
In which lie stillness and answers all true
Saying, the pain feels endless, but please don’t give
Who knows, in this magic, is there a way to live?
